Covid-19 Information:
Due to the current exceptional circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, travelling to Greece and coming to volunteer for Za’atar represents a risk for both Greek people and refugees. The safety of our beneficiaries is our priority. This is why we are currently offering online classes while visits to our day-centre are only by appointment. We welcome volunteers in Athens but also accept people who are interested in volunteering online – this will require you to be really autonomous and proactive.
Zaatar is run and managed by volunteers – we cannot do this without you. Volunteers come from many countries with different backgrounds, bringing unique strengths and passion that makes a real difference. The volunteer experience can definitely be challenging, but it is also rewarding. You will be changing the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world!
Can’t dedicate time to volunteer? Give us a hand with fundraising from back home. We are looking for committed, flexible, and proactive people who have two weeks or more to commit to Zaatar’s work in Athens.
- Volunteers must contribute a minimum of 2 weeks. - Volunteers are expected to work 4-5 six hour shifts per week. - Tasks include: teaching languages, cleaning, and interacting with our refugee community. - For teaching, priority is given to applicants holding CELTA/TEFL qualifications. - Experience and willingness to work with a multicultural team of staff and students. - Preferably has experience working with NGOs. - Preferably has experience working with refugee communities. - Adaptability and flexibility to work in an sometimes volatile and unpredictable environment.
We prioritize volunteers who take initiative. As our team is run completely by volunteers, we sometimes lack the resources to provide constant oversight to short-term volunteers. Therefore, we seek individuals who are able to identify shortcomings in our programs and take the initiative to fix them.
What makes an exceptional volunteer?
Volunteers with Zaatar are primarily involved in helping us to run the Orange House. Most of our volunteers are generalists—covering shifts and doing whatever is needed. In addition volunteers with relevant skills and backgrounds assist with teaching classes and offering a variety of activities. Our volunteers are proactive, suggesting activities and offerings to enhance what we are currently doing.
Our volunteer teacher are requested to help us for a minimum of 6 weeks to a class comprised of adult learners who are refugees. We are looking for teachers for all kinds of levels. Each class you teach will have a maximum of 12 students.
As the international development sector continues to grow, most jobs at international not-for-profits, charities, and NGOs will require their employees to have experience working abroad. This volunteer position represents an excellent opportunity to gain on-the-ground experience for anyone wishing to pursue a career in education or development.
This volunteer role is an excellent opportunity for a new or recent graduate to gain experience of implementing education for development initiatives at both the project and classroom level while living and working in a beautiful part of the world and working alongside interesting and worthwhile projects.
Volunteering with Zaatar will be a meaningful experience.
What we will offer you in return: - Guidance and support throughout your time, both in terms of lesson planning but also emotionally. - Thorough introductory session followed by lesson observations before you start teaching. - Help with lesson planning and teaching technique. - You will have regular meetings with the other teachers to discuss how things are going. - You will have a chance to hang out with and get to know the rest of the volunteer team with regular staff chill-out events - A reference from Zaatar NGO for your future career development. - Bottomless gratitude.
